Dinner with friends

We had a lovely dinner with 2 of our family friends that have also adopted from China.   We finally have a picture of the 3 little girls on the couch.  It was tough, but we finally got a half decent picture of the 3 girls!

100 Good Wishes Quilt

I’m so excited!   R’s 100 good wishes quilt is done!   I finished piecing it in late August, and I took it in to be quilted.  It just came back.   The picture really doesn’t do it justice.  There are more pictures in the gallery.

Family Day

Well, 3 years ago today we became a family of 3.   What and exicitng time.   We had dinner out this evening, and had some lovely cake while watching our adoption movie.  It’s so hard to believe that our sweetie was so small!!  R was also thrilled to see herself as a baby.   Very happy memories.  We are so very  blessed to be together.

Eagerly awaited

We are waiting for news of a new nephew or niece.  A’s brother and wife are in Ukraine and awaiting the birth of their first child.  V every so dilligently posted a list of what she is supposed to bring to the hospital with her.  Check it out!  http://www.passthepaska.com/index.php

Wow. Enough said.

Day 8 – back home

We made it home safely.   R watched her first full length movie on the airplane, Ratatouie.   It was so funny to watch both her and daddy with their headphones on, stareing so intently at the screen.   I couldn’t even give her anything to eat.  I tried to wave a cracker in front of her eyes, she didn’t blink, her eyes stayed plastered to the screen.  I finally put it in her hand, a second later she drags her eyes away from the screen for a second which she used to toss the cracker back my way.  Ok.  Point taken.  Don’t bother me while I’m in my movie zone.   She did drift off to sleep for the last bit of the movie which was good as it was nap time.

Oh I have to tell you what happened at the airport.  We finally made it through check-in and a very croweded security check, and I bought a bottle of water (as my daughter was hollering for a drink).   I emptied the bottle into my re-usable SIGG container, and I looked around for a recycling can.   I couldn’t find one, and seeing 2 security guards, I went over to ask them.  I politely interrupted their conversation and asked where I could recycle the bottle.   The super tall (at least 6’5″) guard gives me a huge smile and says to me “You’re from Canada, aren’t you?”.  I laughed and replied I was.   He said “you people up there recycle everything”.   I polietly agreed.  Then he told me they don’t recycle.   The garbage was the only option.  I asked if they recycled in the larger city of Ft. Lauderdale, he said no.  “Not even PAPER?” was my response.   No he replied.  He told me he had lived in Canada for 7 years and was quite into recycling.  He seemed pretty ashamed that there wasn’t any sort of recycling.  WOW.  Here in my ignorance, I assumed that most of Canada and US recycle!  It is so sad.  Even our cruise ship had paper recycling bins in every stateroom.

Day 7 – Half Moon Cay

Day 7 – Half Moon Cay

Today we docked at an island that Holland America leases from the Bahamas.   It was beautiful, talcum powder soft white sand, and clear turquoise water.  Wow.  A delight.   We got some beach chairs and the fun began.   R was in and out of the water.   We alternated between the simple beach and a play structure they had built that had 2 small water slides.   They also had some floating logs/crabs/sharks for the kids to climb on tethered in the water.  We were there by about 8:30 and were in the water until close to 12pm.

Further down the island they had a BBQ with fresh salads and fruit.  They had these little huts spread out past the kitchen/grill area.  Each hut had 9 picnic tables, and was surrounded by tropical bushes.  It was a delightful place to eat lunch.   Shortly after that we caught the tender back to the ship, and R had a nap.  After daddy and her went swimming again, and I started packing.  Our vacation is over.   We look forward to being home, and celebrating Christmas with you our friends and family.

Day 6 – At Sea

Well we “slept in” today.  R woke us at 7:30am.   This would have been great, if it hadn’t been a very restless night.   Anyways.  We went to visit Emilio and Ronnie, who took our Omelet order, then made it.   After breakfast was swimming.   It was a beautiful day, and the top dome of the pool was open.   It was quite enjoyable to have the pool gently sloshing  back and forth with the rocking of the ship.  Lunch and nap came next.

This evening’s dinner was a mother’s nightmare…It was formal night, so we were all dressed in our finery.  It started with the butter.   R loves butter, and she attempted to butter her own piece of bread.  This was ok, it involved butter falling out of her mouth, and her poking more with her finger to lick.  We put an end to that, got her settled with a nice piece of bread with a thick coating of butter. Our waiter Andi, always brings R a beautiful fruit plate right away and tonight was no exception, except that today it was served in a Martini glass… See where this is heading?

R was thrilled that there was a blackberry on top to eat, and promptly popped it in her mouth.  A moment later she decided she wanted to show it to me,  and it tumbled out of her mouth, bounced its way down her fancy dress, and onto the floor.  You know, one tiny blackberry can do a lot of damage.   There were bits on her chin, all over her dress etc.   At this point I take a deep breath.   Not 2 minutes later her fork drops to the ground.   And another 2 minutes later another spoon bites the dust.   This is all within the first 10 minutes of sitting remember.   I almost had to go take a walk.  Oma ordered a ceasar salad, and R immediately wanted some.   She took some with her fingers onto her own plate, and gave the rest back to Oma.   She takes a bite of the lettuce, and spits it back onto her plate.  This is something she knows she is not supposed to do.  Another deep breath for the parents.

She ate her supper more or less after that.  She and daddy had to go take a walk soon after while dishes we being cleared.   Daddy also had to reassure her that the dessert parade of baked Alaska  complete with sparklers would not be scary. A moment before the parade started daddy and R returned to the table complete with a new strawberry stain on daddy’s WHITE linen dinner jacket.  Sigh.   The lights dimmed, and the parade started, sparklers and all, marching to the Radetsky March.   R took this rather well.   After the baked Alaska was served with black cherry sauce, our waiter Andy came over and did some magic tricks for R.  She was thrilled.   And of course on our way out of the dining room (past the ice sculpture) we had to stop at the mint table, and be served by our friend Oka.   He is the bell boy.   He served mints, and he has a little xylophone that he plays to announce dinner.  Not a bad job I say.

After a quick dance with daddy on the dance floor, we are now heading to bed.  I’m exhausted, and that was supposed to be the relaxing day at Sea.  Oh well.  Tomorrow we stop at Half Moon Cay Bahamas, the cruise line owns the island.  So we’ll have a last beach day before we head north to the snow.

Day Six – St. Martin

Oma and Opa were very generous today and volunteered to take R for the morning so we could go on a tour.  We left in the morning.   It was an island tour.  Our driver was very knowledgeable about the island and we learned a lot.  The tiny island is really two distinct countries on one island.  Unbelievable, different laws, different school systems, 2 airports, 2 water treatment plants, 2 electrical plants.. wow.

Anyways we had a nice drive with some stops for the magnificent views.  We stopped in the French capital,  Marrigot, and it was pretty darn French, with rude sales people just like in France!

We also toured the Dutch capital of Phillipsburg.  It was a lovely little town, with lots and lots of jewelry shops, just like on many of the other islands.   It was pretty much hard work to find shops that were not selling jewelry.   We did manage to find some nice dolls with darker skins for R.  She is thrilled with the new dolls.

This afternoon was quite low key, we all had a good nap, then we played a bit before dinner.   Dinner was lovely, the Beef tenderloin was absolutely delish.  And the dessert, wow.  They had made a white chocolate chef’s hat, signed it with the chef’s name, filled it with chocolate mousse, and drizzled berry stuff on it, and served it with a bit of whipped cream and blueberries.  Wow.   Later tonight is the Dutch Chocolate Extravaganza.   They say it takes 60 hours to prepare!  We’ll see if I can stay up until 10 to see it.

We are now catching a bit of Rattatouie.  (the movie).   It is quite funny.

**  I managed to stay up to see this Dutch Chocolate Extravaganza.  wow.  They had built a replica of the Eiffel tower out of white chocolate, a few dozen different types of chocoate desserts, several dark and light chocolate fountains, a huge fortress made out of chocolate, and more.  Wow.  Jo-anna, that would have been your definition of heaven.  Mom and I ended up only having fruit skewers dipped in white chocolate, but that was enough!

Day 4 – Tortola

Day Four

Another lovely day on vacation.   We spent the morning aboard the ship.  At lunch time we docked in Tortola BVI.   We had a quick nap then headed out to explore.  Rhode Town is not geared towards tourists.  It is a mix of run down buildings and some nice looking colonial type of buildings.  There were a lot of cars out and about, and I must say a lot of NICE cars.   It seemed all the locals were in cars stuck in traffic, and all the tourists were walking around.   There wasn’t much to see.  We did spend a bit of time in front of a nice building that had a mini park.   We saw a few wild chickens, and got R a 2 headed doll. It sounds much worse than it is, the doll reverses, if you pull the full skirt the opposite way, a different doll appears, with a different skirt.  She loves it.

After a delightful swim with daddy, in which she played with some other kids, we had a BBQ on the pool deck.  Once again we are super tired, and it is only 8:30…  Another busy day ahead tomorrow!

Day 3 – Grand Turk

Day Three – Grand Turks

Well we were up again at 6, and off to breakfast shortly after 7.   By 8 we were done, and by 8:30 we were off the ship at Grand Turks.   They have build a large area on shore with shops, and a large pool just for cruise ships.   There is a gorgeous beach just off the pier, and that is where we spent the morning.   R had a great time playing in the sand and surf.  She quite happily was humming to herself and/or telling stories.   Daddy mentioned it was pretty easy to entertain her because we were just props in her stories ie. Daddy move here and be a child, mummy be a fish.  She really need a sibling….

Oma and Opa met us on the beach too and each had a delightful time with R in the water.   Waterlogged, we heading back to the ship to clean off the salt water and have some lunch.   Lunch is always eventful.   R stole Opa’s jello, and Opa graciously admitted defeat and got himself another bowl.  R is charming everyone where ever we go, and all the staff (and passengers) love her.   At pretty much every meal, the waiters make her intricate origami toys.  She has quite a collection of frogs that hop, birds and a bunny.   They are all smitten with her.

We had a nap, and now we are just lazing about our cabin until it is time for supper.  I wanted to do my update now rather than later when I’m just to pooped after such a long day of relaxing!  Sorry, only one picture now, I’ll have to fill in the galleries at home, it is a slow process with a satellite connection
